Anatomy of the Guitar

Published on 07/15/2009 by Elwood | 108 views.

  1. Body - The largest part of the guitar, the body is hollow and amplifies the sound.
  2. Bridge - The wooden peice that holds the strings to the body.
  3. Endpin - Circular metal peice at which a strap can be connected. On an acoustic electric, the endpin often doubles as an output jack.
  4. Fretboard - Top of the neck where the frets are. Also known as the fingerboard.
  5. Markers(Inlays) - Used to help the player identify key frets. Located at the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th, 15th, and 17th frets generally. Not all guitars feature markers.
  6. Headstock - The top or "head" of the guitar where the tuning machines are located.
  7. Neck - Connects the head to the body. The fretboard spans its length.
  8. Nut - The nut guides the strings from the tuners to the straight path they follow on the fretboard.
  9. Pick Guard - Protective sheet on the body that shields against scratches during strumming.
  10. Sound Hole - Opening into the body that sound travels through. Acoustics always have a sound-hole, but electrics usually do not.
  11. Strings - Strings are generally made of metal and are the starting point of the sound a guitar produces. Classical Guitars use nylon strings for their three lightest (thinnest) strings. They produce a more vibrant sound.
  12. Tuners (Machine Heads) - Allow the player to change string pitches by changing tension and length of strings. Tuners are located at the head.
